Research interests and field study

Dr. Astou Gueye’s research and teaching focus on contemporary African literatures, cinema, and popular culture. She builds from interdisciplinary approaches to investigate the role of cultural productions and practices in the construction and performance of various social identities in Africa and its diaspora. Her current book project examines the intersections of agency, power, and pleasure in daily performances of Senegalese femininities through the cultural practice called jongé. Her other areas of interest include feminist discourse and aesthetics in Africa and the Black diaspora.
