Maximilian T. Schuster

  • Assistant Professor

Dr. Maximilian T. Schuster (he, him, his) is an assistant professor of practice in the School of Education’s Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy. Dr. Schuster’s scholarly activities broadly explore the lived experiences of college students with minoritized identities, drawing heavily on campus climate, college student identity development, and critical frameworks. In particular, Dr. Schuster researches the campus experiences of queer college students by interrogating campus and sociopolitical contexts and reimagining institutional structures in ways that center queer students. Recently, Dr. Schuster received a research grant from the ACPA Coalition for Gender and Sexuality Identities to examine the ways LGBTQ+ student leaders experience and make sense of their roles on campus.

Dr. Schuster completed a PhD in Higher Education Management at the University of Pittsburgh, and his dissertation, “Compartmentalized cultures, integrated transitions: Exploring first-year student transition at a middle Atlantic university,” earned the Outstanding Research Award from NODA, the Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education. Dr. Schuster also holds an MEd in Higher Education Management from the University of Pittsburgh and BA in English and French from Washington & Jefferson College.
