Faculty Research Fund

The Women’s Studies Faculty Research Fund supports full-time faculty at the University of Pittsburgh engaged in research and scholarship on gender and women’s issues.

Awards range from $500.00 to $2,500.00 for direct costs related to research, including travel for faculty, payment to students to assist in the research, or other research-related costs.  Travel and expenditures must be arranged in advance through the Women’s Studies Program.  Funds are to be used by the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2014).  Recipients may request an extension by letter to the Director by June 11, 2013.

Recipients must present their research at a Women’s Studies Program brownbag, faculty research seminar, or other forum, to be scheduled with the WS Director.

The competition is open to all full-time faculty at the University of Pittsburgh.  Non-tenure stream faculty are eligible to apply in collaboration with a tenured or tenure-stream faculty member.  Preference in funding will be given to those who are members of the Women’s Studies Steering Committee, or who teach courses cross-listed with Women’s Studies, or who have a substantial record of gender-related research.  Interdisciplinary collaborations are strongly encouraged.  Preference will be given to applicants who have not received this award in the last two years.

Application Procedure

Submit a two- to three-page single-sided proposal describing the overall project and how it contributes to women’s studies scholarship, how this research is connected to or will contribute to your role(s) in the Women’s Studies community at Pitt (e.g., teaching, mentoring students, developing a research program in your unit, etc.), and in what forum you would like to present your research to the WS community. If human subjects approval is necessary for you to conduct this research, you must provide evidence of IRB approval with your application.  Include a one-page budget detailing how you plan to use the funds requested and how these funds will contribute to your research; and a brief, current vita. Review Pitt's policy on reimbursable expenses before submitting your proposed budget.  Consult the Program Assistant before using awarded funds.  Incomplete applications will be returned without review. Download an application cover sheet or obtain a copy from the Women’s Studies Program office.

Submit materials by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013 to 2208 Wesley W. Posvar Hall.  Please contact Dr. Jean Ferguson Carr, Director of Women’s Studies for additional information.
