Grants for NTS Faculty for Projects in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies

The GSWS program supports and values the contributions of non-tenure-stream faculty (lecturers, visiting lecturers and instructors, part-time instructors) and is making available funds in AY16-17 to support NTS faculty in projects related to the study of gender or sexuality. Applicants must be affiliated faculty in GSWS, and strong preference will be given to faculty who teach cross-listed GSWS courses or are active in the program.

Awards of up to $1000 will be made, although smaller requests may be more likely to be funded. We expect applicants to have sought funds elsewhere as available, and to explain their need for our support in particular. Travel and expenditures must be arranged in advance through the program. Faculty must be under contract at the time of application and at the time in which the project is conducted. Preference will be given to proposals with a clear research or pedagogical rationale that effectively addresses readers beyond the project's home discipline and that actively engages and contributes to gender/sexuality studies. Concrete results of the project must be specified. The amount of funding depends on donations to the program.

Application Procedure

The research proposal must be typewritten and double-spaced, sent as a single scanned document. Include items 1-5 in this order:

1.    A cover sheet with the following information: name, address, email, title of project, funds requested, IRB status (if relevant), your relation to GSWS program (e.g. courses taught, administrative contributions).

2.    Current Curriculum Vitae

3.    Project Description Summary (<2 pages): Outline the underlying theory of the project, the questions being asked, the specific issues being investigated, and a statement of your project’s relevance to gender or sexuality studies. Please also include a short statement about how your work will benefit the GSWS program or the study of gender/sexuality at Pitt beyond your own work (e.g. teaching, brownbag presentation, etc.).

4.    Project Timetable (no more than 1 page): Summarize the sequential stages of the project and indicate a proposed date for the completion of each step.

5.    Itemized Budget (no more than 1 page): Explain in detail the cost of the overall project (with line items for travel, research materials, books, copying, and any other direct costs). Indicate on the budget page which item(s) listed will be supplemented or covered by this award, and indicate other sources of funding (if any). Review Pitt's policy on reimbursable expenses before submitting your proposed budget. Consult the Program Assistant before using any awarded funds.

Please send as a single pdf file in the order listed above to
