"Translating the French 'Feminists': Colette, Beauvoir, Cixous, Irigaray"

March 30, 2011 - 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Speaker/Participants:
Carol Mastrangelo Bove (Senior Lecturer, English, University of Pittsburgh; Professor Emerita, French, Westminster College)

Women's Studies Program

The translator encounters special problems in rendering some of the best French feminist writers in English including Colette, Beauvoir, Cixous, and Irigaray.  Difficulties emerge from the complexity and creativity of their writing on sexuality.  Having translated three of the four and taught the controversial new translation of Beauvoir, I examine their writing and the challenges they pose for the translator.
