"Trans! Just for the Fun of it!": Keynote Lecture for Undergrad Conference

BornsteinIn this keynote address, Bornstein uses the basic tenets of postmodern theory and Tibetan Buddhism and shows how they overlap at slapstick comedy. She infuses her own sense of humor and unique style to remind us that there is a great deal of physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual joy from creating and living one’s gender mindfully!Keynote address is free and open to the public.

Kate Bornstein is an historic figure in the queer and trans community. She is a celebrated author, performance artist, and public speaker, who has written several award-winning books in the field of women and gender studies, including Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us and My Gender Workbook. Her 2006 book Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws propelled Bornstein into an international position of advocacy for marginalized and at-risk youth.

The Undergraduate Conference on Gender and the Body will take place all day on Saturday, April 2, from 9am until 7pm. It will include panels throughout the day where undergraduate students from Pitt and around the region will showcase their work. The panels will explore subjects of ongoing scholarly and popular dialogue and debate, such as security and violence, gender and sexual expression, race and ethnicity, reproductive  justice, transgender rights, media, and performativity.
