Sustainability includes constructing democratic governance structures; producing safe and adequate food, housing, and renewable energy systems; and ensuring open and accessible modes of communication. The notion of sustainability reflects both the need to develop everyday practical strategies as well as to articulate a vision of the future that will be more economically equitable, peaceful and socially just.  Feminists have long deliberated and practiced forms of sustainability designed to create and sustain what Vandana Shiva calls “earth democracy.”  This talk examines some of the historic and contemporary feminist strategies for sustaining democracy in diverse communities with focus on participatory democracy and sustainable economics.
