The Pitt LGBTQIA+ Experience: Past, Present, and Future

April 12, 2016 - 5:00pm

Alumni, current students, faculty and University leaders will share their experiences on a panel discussion and community forum exploring the evolving efforts of the University in working with LGBTQ students through its resources and programing.

Alumni, current students, faculty and University leaders will share their experiences on a panel discussion and community forum exploring the evolving efforts of the University in working with LGBTQ students through its resources and programing.  Hear firsthand accounts from today’s Pitt students on the atmosphere and attitude of the LGBTQ community on campus and understand from University leadership the evolution of Pitt practices, policies, and curriculum, as well as commentary and direction on what may lie ahead.  By sharing personal anecdotes from today’s students that can be viewed through the lens of attendees’ personal experiences, the program seeks to begin to heal historical conflicts between the LGBTQ community and the University and foster the opportunity for strong future alumni partnerships.  In addition, the event will connect current students to alumni, promote engagement and professional networking, and a sense of “Pitt for life” among Pitt current students.  This event is the first of its kind at Pitt focused on the LGBTQ community and speaks directly to Pitt’s focus on diversity and inclusion.  It will be a part of Pitt’s Pride Week programming, coordinated by the campus Rainbow Alliance chapter, and will precede a lecture by Michael Sam, the first openly gay athlete drafted into the National Football League.
