This paper explores the writing practices of the Boston Women’s Health Book Collectives, the writers of Our Bodies, Ourselves, as they developed over forty-five years, 1970-2015.  I begin by looking at the language the collective used in descriptions of the clitoris in the very first editions of the book. I compare their descriptions of the clitoris to those written during the great western rediscovery of this organ: the anatomical revolution sponsored by new practices of observation in the sixteenth century. I consider what kind of knowledge the language of Our Bodies, Ourselves sponsored, how the collective negotiated their commitment to a universal female body in the context of global feminism, and how their language has changed in response to developments in medical research and the organization of medical care.
