"Religion and Reaction: Seculars Combat the Religious Right"

February 1, 2012 - 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Speaker/Participants:
Dr. Susan Blackall Hansen (Professor of Political Science, University of Pittsburgh)

Women's Studies Program

My recent book Religion and Reaction: The Secular Political Challenge to the Religious Right, analyzes the growing numbers and political influence of Secular Americans.  Working with religious progressives, civil libertarians, gays, feminists, and the scientific community,  Seculars have increasingly mobilized to oppose the social, political, and media influence of the Religious Right.

This talk will consider some of  the strategies Seculars and their allies have developed to combat the Religious Right over the issues of gay marriage, reproductive rights, and teaching evolution. I will also discuss the values and policies likely to emerge in an increasingly secular America.
