Discussion-based Colloquium: Gayle Rubin (UMichigan)

October 16, 2017 - 12:30pm - 2:00pm

Sponsored by the Humanities Center.

A Short History of Perversion
For this colloquium, Gayle Rubin will circulate a draft of the introductory chapter of her next book, Valley of the Kings: Leathermen in San Francisco, 1960-1990. In this chapter, she seeks to explore how "leather" and some of the erotic practices now associated with it came to be identifiable constellations of conduct. The bulk of the text is a discussion of the formation and trajectories of the concepts and taxonomies of sexual perversion within medical psychiatry.
