“Are My Pants Lowering Your Test Scores?: Blaming Girls for Challenges Facing Boys”

February 25, 2016 - 4:00pm - 5:30pm
Speaker/Participants:
Sara Goodkind, School of Social Work (Pitt)

Based on participatory research with high school students and the adults that care for and educate them, this presentation critically examines how girls are faulted for the so-called "boy crisis." Drawing on interview and focus group data, as well as school policies and media representations, this presentation explores how policies, actions, and rhetoric implicitly and explicitly blame girls for challenges facing low-income boys of color that are in fact due to broader issues of social inequality, particularly poverty and racism.
