Pezzullo’s paper focuses on the resistance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) by using the concept of counterpublics. First off, to understand ‘counterpublic’, Pezzullo explains the concept of a ‘public’ or public sphere. A public sphere is a “theater in modern societies in which political participation is enacted” whose importance “lies in its potential as a mode of social integration.” Pezzullo then uses the example of NBCAM as a public and Toxic Link Coalition (TLC) as a counterpublic to describe instances of how rhetoric and performances can influence a movement.
