Visiting Instructorships in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies

Each year, the Program hires advanced graduate students or recent PhD’s as visiting instructors to teach undergraduate courses, including the introductory course, Introduction to Feminist Theory, Sex and Sexualities, or others. Visiting instructors teach 2 courses per term, and visiting lecturers 3 courses per term. These positions are not TF’s-ships but do include partial tuition as well as full benefits. Students must be enrolled in the certificate program to be eligible (or have completed the certificate or a similar certificate/degree elsewhere). Interested students may contact the Program Director at the end of fall semester or in January for further information. 

Instructors will have responsibility for designing a syllabus and implementing each course, in consultation with a faculty mentor and within curricular parameters set by the Program. Details about current and past courses, including syllabi, are available on the Program website (see "Resources"). Instructors are also required to participate in the research activities of the program (lectures and other events), to serve on the Steering Committee, and to organize events for undergraduate students.

Criteria

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and syllabus design.
  • A record of interdisciplinary coursework or other interdisciplinary experiences. 
  • Research interests in gender, sexuality, or women’s studies.
  • Official enrollment in a Gender/Sexuality/Women's Studies Graduate Certificate or PhD Program (at Pitt or elsewhere) and significant progress toward certificate requirements. 
  • Contributions to diversity

Application Procedure

The applicant MUST include all of the information requested below in the designated format to be considered. Applications must be ELECTRONICALLY SUBMITTED in a single pdf file to the Program Director at reeser@pitt.edu.   

  1. A recent curriculum vitae. Applicants may also include a short dissertation description.
  2. A formal cover letter addressed to the director of the program that includes: a statement of qualifications and experience relevant for this position, a statement of why you would like to teach these courses, and your approach to teaching gender/sexuality/women’s studies courses (this could include themes and topics, a sample of readings, and/or a discussion of your pedagogical approach). A statement about interdisciplinary approaches to GSWS may be included. Possible contributions to extracurricular activites may be included as well.
  3. A sample syllabus for an introductory course on gender, sexuality, and women or for feminist theory is recommended but not required. Applicants may also include a syllabus for another course already taught.
  4. A teaching dossier, including sample pedagogical materials and current student, peer, or mentor evaluations (no more than 20 pages). OMETS [student evaluations] from at least two courses should be included.
  5. A graduate course transcript (unofficial is acceptable).
  6. A diversity statement. Applicants are encouraged to share how their past, planned, or potential contributions or experiences relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion will advance the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to inclusive excellence. 
  7. Two letters of reference (sent directly to Prof. Reeser hard copy or via email at reeser@pitt.edu). At least one letter should be from someone who has direct knowledge about the applicant's teaching. 

Finalists for the positions may be invited to an interview.

The number and type of available positions depends on Dean allocation. The program also often hires AY and summer part-time instructors from this pool of applicants.
